Free Draw

Oh. Wow.
Yes this does say "Jersey Shore" in the bottom right corner. Yes it does have Snookie and other characters from the show listed above it (Well, I'm just guessing. I've never actually seen the show). Yes this was made by a 4th-grader. Yes this is the reason why I will never get rid of "free draw" time.

In other art room news, look at the sweet poster one of my students gave to me yesterday before school started:

This is Van Gogh's "The Starry Night". You've probably seen it before. A lot. It's pretty famous. In the art teaching world, it's actually pretty cliche. But I don't care. I think I'll always love it -and not because of my background knowledge on it from art history classes or because Van Gogh inspired me in some way or something... I will always be a fan because of this:

*I'm sure there are other versions of this episode available on the internet, but come on, this version is golden

Swiss Miss

A few months ago, one of my close friends, Tiffany, announced that she would be going to Switzerland for the month of July for a study-abroad program. She then invited me and some other friends to come on over to visit/stay with her while she was there. Ummm... invitation to Switzerland with friends and free room to stay in? Yes please! So I immediately began looking at flights and dates and, eventually, everything just fell into place:)

So I traveled to Zurich July 22/23 (My first overseas flight) and lived it up in the alps for a whole week! It was such a neat experience and I still don't think it has really hit me yet that I was actually there. It was so great also because I got to do so much! I did/saw everything I had planned and more. I went to Zurich, Geneva, Bern, Interlaken, Lausanne, Montreux, Gruyere, and more. I got to go to the top of the Matterhorn, bob-luge, hike the alps, see the Bern temple, eat Swiss cheese and chocolate, see amazing/famous art, go to the olympic museum, tour a castle, see Einstein's house, ride a train (a lot)... and I did most all of it with some of my favorite people. Switzerland, you did me good.

Top 5 favs of being in Switzerland
-Everything had decoration and seemed to be designed to be beautiful (not just practical, like it seems how everything at home was designed)
-Everything was gorgeous from every angle (I've never taken so many pictures on a trip in my life)
-So many people had dogs and they took them everywhere (I saw dogs coming out of hotels with people, stores, restaurants*)
-Swiss water. 'nuff said
-Little kids speaking in French and German all over the place

Top 5 not-favs of being in Switzerland
-EVERYBODY in Switzerland smokes and smokes everywhere. It was sick
-Hardly anything stays open later than 6pm
-Not being able to use a phone for a week (Seriously, if I got lost or was going to be late or anything, I couldn't call anyone to let them know -That's a big part of why traveling to and going up the Matterhorn all by myself felt like such an accomplishment)
-*Switzerland doesn't care as much about germs as we/I do (I saw a baker cutting a cheesecake, lick her fingers, cut/touch/lick more, and then place it in the display case for people to buy ...a lot of bathrooms didn't even have a place where soap would have been, etc...)
-Man capris.
